Leaving from the Clear Lake side of Houston, you can reach Space Center Houston in about 15 minutes down I-45 and east on NASA Parkway. It's an easy visit to keep putting off, though. Our advice for a day that actually works: arrive at 10 AM on a weekday, grab your tram boarding pass at Guest Services before you look at a single exhibit, and budget at least four hours. The trip suits the 2026 Subaru Crosstrek well. Nothing dramatic about it, and that's fine. The Gulf Freeway corridor and that Space Center parking lot just ask for practical.
That 10 AM boarding-pass detail matters more than it sounds, and we'll get to why.
What's the Plan at a Glance?
Space Center Houston sits at 1601 NASA Parkway in Webster, run by the nonprofit Manned Space Flight Education Foundation as a Smithsonian Affiliate and the official public visitor complex for NASA Johnson Space Center. The complex spans more than 250,000 square feet of exhibits, and the pieces worth the most of your time split between the main building and the active NASA campus next door.
| Stop | What to Do | Best Time | Parking |
|---|---|---|---|
| Arrival / Guest Services | Secure your tram boarding pass immediately on entry (first-come, first-served) | 10 AM weekdays | On-site lot off NASA Parkway; small day-use fee (no number on the lot signs; bring a card) |
| NASA Tram Tour / Rocket Park | Walk the full 363-foot Saturn V in its climate-controlled hangar; board the tram before the afternoon heat and storm window | First slot of the day | Same on-site lot; open-air tram may suspend during active lightning |
| Independence Plaza | Step inside the original NASA 905 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft with the full shuttle replica mounted on top | Mid-morning | Same lot; no additional move |
| Historic Mission Control | Apollo-era consoles restored to their 1969 appearance; timed add-on ticket required | Book before you arrive | No additional parking |
| Starship Gallery / Moon Rocks | Flown Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo hardware; touchable lunar samples from the largest public collection in the world | Any time, inside | Already inside the main building |
Space Center Houston: What to Prioritize
The Saturn V at George W.S. Abbey Rocket Park is the piece that earns the trip. Space Center Houston's official site lists it as one of only three remaining Saturn V rockets worldwide. Picture 363 feet of flight-certified hardware, built to fly and never launched. It sits horizontally in a climate-controlled hangar, and the move that's easy to miss is standing underneath and looking up the staging. Save the wide exterior shot for later. The scale only registers from below.
The NASA Tram Tour reaches Rocket Park and runs through the working Johnson Space Center campus (the only way onto that campus a civilian can access without a badge). It operates on rolling first-come, first-served departures. Our team at Subaru of Clear Lake has heard the same story from customers afterward. They walked through the first exhibit hall, spent 45 minutes on it, then found the tram boarding passes gone for the morning. Go to Guest Services first. That single step separates a great day from a frustrating one.
September still sits squarely in Houston's wet season. The NASA tram runs open-air, and Space Center Houston suspends tram operations during active lightning. Go in the morning and you'll catch the tram slot before afternoon storms build.
Plan 4 to 6 hours for a full visit covering the tram, Independence Plaza, and the main galleries. Historic Mission Control (the actual room where Apollo 11 was guided home, restored to look exactly as it did in 1969) needs a separate timed ticket that books out fast during school breaks. Buy it with general admission if it's a priority.
The Route: Gulf Freeway to NASA Parkway
From our dealership on Gulf Freeway (I-45 southbound), the drive to Space Center Houston runs about as simple as trips get. Head south on I-45, then east on NASA Parkway, and you're there in fifteen to twenty minutes under normal weekday morning conditions. The Crosstrek Hybrid earns its keep on exactly this kind of in-town pattern. The EPA rates the 2026 Crosstrek Hybrid AWD at 36 MPG combined, so a sub-50-mile round trip barely moves the gauge.
The corridor stays flat and well-marked the entire drive. Signage points you east toward the Space Center once you exit I-45.
One honest thing about this corridor in September is drainage. The feeder roads along Gulf Freeway and the intersections near Space Center Boulevard hold water fast when a tropical downpour hits, and Clear Lake's geography sits low. The standard Symmetrical AWD on every 2026 Crosstrek handles wet pavement well, but it's no tool for standing water.
Check Houston TranStar before you leave if there's been significant rain in the hours before your trip. The practical move is to turn around at a flooded feeder road rather than power through.
Why the 2026 Crosstrek Fits This Trip
The Crosstrek fits this trip well, and not because it's the flashiest thing on our lot. It isn't the most exciting thing we sell. The Outback Wilderness is for people who point at serious terrain. The Crosstrek is for people who point at Beach City Road, Bay Area Boulevard parking lots, and the kind of low-clearance neighborhood driveways that dot Clear Lake City. For that pattern, the fit is genuine.
Subaru lists standard ground clearance at 8.7 inches on conventional Crosstrek trims, up to 9.3 inches on the Wilderness variant. The EPA rates the 2.5-liter gas trims at 26 city and 33 highway. The 2.5-liter 180-horsepower Boxer engine is now standard across the entire 2026 gas lineup, every trim, not just Sport and up. Standard EyeSight Driver Assist Technology runs on every trim too, which matters on NASA Road 1. Locally, that road's documented for tourist braking near the Space Center entrance. Lane-departure and pre-collision assist working in the background is a quiet benefit that fits the corridor.
The Crosstrek seats five and carries 54.7 cubic feet of cargo with the rear seats folded. A cooler, a stroller, and the gear for a day out in September heat fit without rearranging your priorities. That's the practical case. If your family's outgrown the size, that's a real tradeoff. The conversation about the right Subaru for your situation is one we're happy to have on the lot.
